As I was analyzing Senior Learning & Development roles for this newsletter, I found that job titles were surprisingly inconsistent. I expected that Director level roles would be more senior than Manager roles and would pay more than Senior Manager roles. Looking at the data, that wasn’t true! Instead, what I found was that job titles at the Senior L&D level frequently did not align with salaries or with job responsibilities.

I started digging into these roles because a few folks have asked me recently if more senior level Learning & Development roles require people management or if there’s an opportunity to progress in the career by shifting to more strategic work. The short version: it is definitely possible to progress to a mid-six figure salary in L&D and focus primarily on strategy, content development, and learning programming.

My goal in today’s newsletter is to dive into what I’m seeing in (remote) senior Learning & Development roles, at both EdTech companies and industry roles. Since I’ve been expanding my sourcing strategies to include more of the latter, I can do a little comparison between the types of senior L&D roles we see in EdTech and those that we see outside of EdTech. But a caveat: the sample sizes are small so this more observational than conclusive data!

I hope this exploration helps you think about how to position your own experience (maybe even by forefronting different parts of your experience) as well as identify what types of roles to target (including ones that might not have been on your radar).
